Ivy by Franciscan.

Description: /thismonth/images/ivy/oatmeal200x.jpgIvy was added as part of the California-based Gladding, McBean, & Co.'s Franciscan tableware line in 1948. It was among a variety of hand-painted earthenware patterns from Franciscan made with an unique trademarked formula that consisted of a mineral called Malinite. This formula was used "to enable a larger variety of colors, a softer finish, and to manage the very same strength as discovered in vitrified china," and gave Franciscan pottery a practical one-upmanship over other tableware. It could be made use of oven-to-table and was likewise dishwasher safe. This was uncommon at the time because many dinnerware was susceptible to crazing (spider web like crackling of the glaze) with "every day" usage and care. In addition, Ivy's simple and charming hand painted, embossed design helped it work well in many settings. In later years, manufacturing of Franciscan dinnerware was moved to England where Ivy is now produced.
